SUMMARY:Handwork 2026 - The Ergonomic Efficiency of English Style Knitting (“Throwing”)
DESCRIPTION:This program is part of Handwork 2026\, presented by Craft in America \nMany knitters avoid knitting in the English style (a.k.a. “British” or “throwing”) or even switch to another style because they think it can’t be efficient. The truth is\, it’s a very efficient method\, but it’s being done wrong by most of us in the 21st century. \nLearn how to comfortably knit using this technique with ease from author\, life-long knitter and former physical therapist Carson Demers. \nThis class is a deep dive into the original techniques and landmarks of English knitting\, what we’ve done to make it seem inefficient and slow\, and how to undo or modify those faulty variations. \nKnitters will learn to knit more efficiently and more comfortably with this class. \nBeginners are welcome but this is not a learn-to-knit class for first timers. Knitters must be able to independently cast-on\, and make knit and purl stitches in the English style. \nNote that there is homework before the workshop. Students are asked to use light colored worsted weight yarn to cast on 30 stitches (any technique) and work as follows: \n\nRows 1-6: Knit all stitches (garter stitch).\nRow 7 (WS): Knit 2. Purl 26 st. Knit 2 st.\nRow 8 (RS): Knit all stitches.\nRepeat Rows 7 and 8 until sample measures 4-inches (10.6 cm)\nDo NOT bind off. Leave work on needles and bring to class with needles and yarn used to make sample (4 oz. is sufficient) and needles appropriate for yarn.\n\nStudents joining us for this workshop receive free admission to Carson’s lecture\, Knitting Sustainably. You will receive details on how to register for the lecture with free admission upon signing up for this workshop.

SUMMARY:Handwork 2026 - Continental Knitting with Comfort and Efficiency
DESCRIPTION:This program is part of Handwork 2026\, presented by Craft in America \nLearn how to knit with ease from author\, life-long knitter and physical therapist Carson Demers. \nMany people think that continental knitting is the way to go for speed and efficiency. \nYet many continental style knitters aren’t getting all they can from the technique because of technique variations away from the traditional system. These modern modifications make continental knitters very susceptible to discomfort and injury. \nThis class is a deep dive into how to improve your technique\, lower your risk of injury\, and increase efficiency and comfort.

SUMMARY:Handwork 2026 - Swatchbuckling (a.k.a.\, “Applying Ergonomics to Knitting”)
DESCRIPTION:This program is part of Handwork 2026\, presented by Craft in America \nAvast ye mateys! With the help of author\, knitter\, and physical therapist Carson Demers\, bring improved ergonomics to life in your knitting technique. \nThis class identifies ergonomic risk in knitting and teaches you how to reduce or eliminate it. \nWe’ll examine yarn tensioning techniques\, and all phases of stitch creation and practice optimal methods of making them. \nYou’ll practice ways to… \n\nImprove seated posture.\nBetter understand needle choices and options to find the right fit for you and your project.\nHow to avoid stiffness and injuries caused by disuse.\nEven walk and knit!\n\nLet’s rethink the idea of “swatching” and make it something that is actually fun and useful in ways you’ve probably never imagined. \nNote: Class is appropriate for students who are comfortable with basic knit purl stitches. This is not a beginner knitting workshop. \nStudents joining us for this workshop receive free admission to Carson’s lecture\, Knitting Sustainably. You will receive details on how to register for the lecture with free admission upon signing up for this workshop.

SUMMARY:Handwork 2026 - Will This Yarn Hurt My Hands? The Ergonomics and Mechanics of Yarn
DESCRIPTION:This program is part of Handwork 2026\, presented by Craft in America \nThis class is appropriate for knitters and crocheters\, spinners\, and any crafter who uses yarn. \nCreating or embellishing fabric is an exercise in energy exchange between your body and the yarn. \nSome yarns will help with this exchange while others are ‘energy vampires’ that require you to give your all! \nIn this class\, you’ll “dissect” a variety of yarns to understand how helpful it will be in sharing the work. \nWe’ll go far beyond what some think is obvious (cotton is “harder” to knit than wool) and dive deeply into the characteristics of plant and animal fibers\, fiber\, yarn structure and construction and how it relates to fiber artists’ hand comfort. \nSpinners will learn how to make a yarn that will be comfortable for them and others to work with. \nUnderstanding the mechanics\, fiber and construction of yarns will help you to select and make yarns that will be comfortable for your hands and arms to work with. You’ll learn how to make a more challenging yarn a comfortable one. \nYarn will be provided. \nStudents joining us for this workshop receive free admission to Carson’s lecture\, Knitting Sustainably. You will receive details on how to register for the lecture with free admission upon signing up for this workshop.

SUMMARY:Handwork 2026 - Ergonomics for Spinners
DESCRIPTION:This program is part of Handwork 2026\, presented by Craft in America \nComfortable spinning helps make a beautiful you! Learn how to spin with ease from author\, life-long knitter and physical therapist Carson Demers. \nIn this workshop\, we will… \n\nWork with a variety of wools to focus on how to get the yarn you want when even traditional techniques aren’t keeping you comfortable while you spin.\nExplore various fiber preparation and drafting techniques to reduce strain and still get your ideal yarn.\nDive deeply into the ergonomics of your spinning environment. You’ll learn how to modify it to keep you spinning comfortably.\nAssess your wheel’s fit to your body. You’ll learn stretches and strengthening exercises that are especially helpful when your wheel isn’t an optimal fit.\n\nThis is not a class for people who have not spun on a wheel before. Students must be able to spin consistent singles with both a forward and backward draft even if the yarn is uneven. \nStudents joining us for this workshop receive free admission to Carson’s lecture\, Knitting Sustainably. You will receive details on how to register for the lecture with free admission upon signing up for this workshop.
