SUMMARY:PEI Fibre Festival 2026 - Knitting Comfortably Ever After
DESCRIPTION:This class is not an individual knitting assessment. \nDuration: 3 hours | Capacity: 30\nLocation: Level 1 – Summerside Room \n\n\nEver known a knitter who hasn’t said\, “Just one more row”? Me neither! But many knitters also experience aching hands\, sore shoulders\, or tight necks after long knitting sessions. \nIn this engaging and informative class\, you’ll explore how knitting affects the “fabric that makes the fabric” — your body. Using principles from physical therapy\, we’ll look at how posture\, movement patterns\, and knitting habits can influence comfort\, efficiency\, and long-term joint health while you knit. \nParticipants will complete a guided Risk of Injury self-assessment to better understand how their own knitting practices may contribute to common aches and pains in the hands\, wrists\, elbows\, shoulders\, neck\, and back. You’ll also learn how small adjustments to your posture\, knitting setup\, and movement patterns can significantly reduce strain and fatigue. \nThis class is taught by a passionate knitter who is also a licensed physical therapist\, bringing professional insight to the physical demands of knitting. \nPast students have called this class “required learning for knitters of any experience level” and said it’s “as important as learning the knit and purl stitches.” \nPlease note: This class focuses on general education and self-awareness and does not include individual physical therapy assessments. \nThrough discussion and demonstration\, the class will cover practical strategies to help you:\n\nKnit longer with less discomfort\nImprove efficiency and reduce unnecessary tension\nRecognize early signs of repetitive strain\nMake simple ergonomic adjustments to support your body

SUMMARY:PEI Fibre Festival 2026 - What’s the Point of Your Needle – The Ergonomics of Knitting Needles
DESCRIPTION:By the end of the class\, you’ll have a new understanding of how needle design influences your knitting and comfort. You’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to choose the best needle for each project—making your knitting more comfortable\, efficient\, and enjoyable. \nDuration: 6 hours (one hour for lunch) | Capacity: 25\nLocation: Level 1 – Summerside Room \n\n\nA knitting needle is not just a needle. The needle you choose can have a major impact on how comfortable\, efficient\, and enjoyable your knitting experience is. Yet many of us simply reach for whatever needle size the pattern recommends—or whichever needle happens to be available—without considering how the needle’s design interacts with the yarn and stitch pattern. \nModern knitting needles come in a wide range of materials\, tip shapes\, shaft finishes\, cable styles\, and flexibility\, all of which influence how stitches form and move on the needle. When the needle and yarn are well matched\, knitting can feel smooth\, effortless\, and rhythmic. When they aren’t\, you may find yourself struggling with tight stitches\, hand fatigue\, slower progress\, or even eye strain and physical discomfort. \nIn this hands-on class\, you’ll explore how different needle features affect your knitting through guided experimentation with a variety of needles\, yarns\, and stitch patterns. By trying different combinations\, you’ll experience firsthand how dramatically the right needle can improve comfort\, stitch control\, and knitting efficiency. \nParticipants will learn how to:\n\nIdentify key needle features such as tip shape\, material\, surface finish\, and flexibility\nUnderstand how different needles interact with yarn types and stitch patterns\nRecognize when a needle choice may be contributing to fatigue or frustration\nSelect needles that support better ergonomics\, smoother knitting\, and greater enjoyment

SUMMARY:PEI Fibre Festival 2026 - The Ergonomic Efficiency of English Style Knitting
DESCRIPTION:If you have been unhappy with the efficiency and productivity of your English style knitting\, this will help you improve both through discovery of how very efficient this method is intended to be. The goal of this class is to enhance your existing technique rather than learn a new style of knitting. For best outcome of all participants\, this workshop is suited to existing knitters. It is not intended to teach you how to knit but how to knit more efficiently. \nSkill Expectations for this Workshop: \n– Basic knitting skills: knit/purl\, cast on/bind off\, increase/decrease \nDuration: 3 hours | Capacity: 20\nLocation: Level 1 – Summerside Room \n\n\nMany knitters avoid the English style of knitting (often called “British” or “throwing”) because they believe it’s slow or inefficient. Some even abandon it entirely in favour of other methods. But the truth is that English knitting can be highly efficient and comfortable—when it’s done the way it was originally intended. \nIn this class\, we’ll take a deep dive into the traditional mechanics and key hand positions of English knitting. Over time\, small changes in how the method is commonly taught and demonstrated have made it appear slower and more effortful than it actually needs to be. By exploring the original movement patterns and structural landmarks of the technique\, you’ll see how English knitting was designed to work smoothly and efficiently. This class will teach you a technique reminiscent of traditional Shetland knitting minus the belt. \nThrough demonstration and guided practice\, knitters will learn how to:\n\nIdentify common habits that make English knitting slower or more tiring\nUnderstand the original hand positions and yarn movements used in traditional English knitting\nModify or correct inefficient variations that have developed over time\nImprove speed\, rhythm\, and comfort while maintaining the English style

SUMMARY:PEI Fibre Festival 2026 - Continental Knitting with Comfort and Efficiency
DESCRIPTION:Looking to improve your existing knitting skills? If you already knit continental\, this class will help you refine your technique to knit more comfortably\, efficiently and sustainably. The goal of this class is to enhance your existing technique rather than learn a new style of knitting. For best outcome of all participants\, this workshop is suited to existing knitters. It is not intended to teach you how to knit but how to knit more efficiently. \nSkill Expectations for this Workshop: \n– Basic knitting skills: knit/purl\, cast on/bind off\, increase/decrease \nDuration: 3 hours | Capacity: 25\nLocation: Level 1 – Summerside Room \n\n\nContinental knitting is often praised as the fastest and most efficient knitting style\, leading many knitters to adopt it in hopes of improving their speed. However\, many continental knitters aren’t getting the full benefits of the technique because modern variations have drifted away from the traditional movement patterns that make the method efficient and sustainable. \nThese small changes in hand position\, yarn management\, and movement can place unnecessary strain on the hands\, wrists\, and shoulders—sometimes leading to fatigue\, discomfort\, or repetitive strain over time. \nIn this class\, we’ll take a closer look at the core mechanics of traditional continental knitting and explore how the technique was originally designed to function. Through demonstration and guided discussion\, you’ll learn how subtle adjustments can improve efficiency while reducing stress on the body. \nParticipants will learn how to:\n\nRecognize common continental knitting habits that create extra tension or strain\nUnderstand the traditional hand positions and yarn movements that support efficient knitting\nModify technique variations that may contribute to discomfort or reduced speed\nImprove rhythm\, comfort\, and control while knitting continental style
